Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Hamad Chande has praised the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) for taking measurement education to schools, saying the initiative is helping shape a generation that understands consumer rights and the importance of fair trade.
Hon. Chande made the remarks yesterday during his visit to the WMA pavilion at the 33rd Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition at the Dr John Malecela Exhibition Grounds in Nzuguni, Dodoma.
The Deputy Minister interacted with pupils from Blessed Mabuba Primary School in Dodoma who had undergone training on weights and measures.
He tested their knowledge on the subject and expressed satisfaction with their ability to explain the importance of using accurate measurements.
He said the students’ understanding demonstrated the impact of WMA’s awareness programme, which aims to introduce consumers to their rights from an early age.
“These children understand that accurate measurement is everyone’s right. They are the Weights and Measures Officers of tomorrow,” Chande said.
He noted that educating students on measurement standards would help create responsible citizens who can identify unfair trade practices and demand accurate services and products.
The Deputy Minister said consumer awareness was critical in building trust between traders and buyers, while supporting a transparent business environment.
Blessed Mabuba Primary School teacher Irene Ketta said the programme had improved students’ understanding of accurate measurements, product labels and the proper use of weighing scales.
“WMA’s decision to educate children is important because it helps create informed consumers and future traders who value honesty. This is a foundation for a strong economy,” she said.
WMA said it would continue expanding its public education campaigns to reach more groups, including students, traders and consumers, as part of efforts to strengthen consumer protection and promote fair trade practices.
The agency said improved awareness of weights and measures would help reduce malpractices and increase confidence in commercial transactions across the country.
