Tanzania, Serbia seek stronger ties through parliamentary diplomacy

By Our Reporter

Tanzania and Serbia are looking to deepen bilateral cooperation, with parliamentary diplomacy emerging as a key channel for strengthening relations and creating more opportunities for citizens of the two countries.

The issue was discussed when Speaker of the National Assembly Mussa Azzan Zungu met Serbia’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Jovica Topalović, in Dodoma.

The talks focused on ways to give fresh impetus to the longstanding friendship between Tanzania and Serbia, including strengthening cooperation between the two parliaments through experience-sharing, knowledge exchange and closer institutional engagement.

For Tanzania, stronger parliamentary ties could provide an additional avenue for sharing experiences on legislation, oversight and public administration while creating space for the two countries to identify areas of mutual interest.

The two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in education, trade, tourism and sports—sectors that could provide direct opportunities for citizens and businesses if supported by stronger bilateral engagement.

Mr Zungu congratulated Ambassador Topalović and the Serbian Government on opening an embassy in Dodoma, describing the development as an important step in strengthening diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

He also welcomed Serbia’s plans to construct a permanent embassy in the Government City of Mtumba.

Ambassador Topalović thanked the Tanzanian Government for allocating land to Serbia in the Government City and said preparations for construction of the embassy were progressing.

The planned embassy is expected to strengthen Serbia’s diplomatic presence in Tanzania and make it easier for the two governments and their institutions to maintain regular engagement.

Tanzania and Serbia have maintained friendly relations rooted in historical ties, mutual respect and cooperation in international affairs.

The latest engagement signals a renewed focus on turning those relations into practical cooperation, particularly in areas such as education, trade, tourism, sports and parliamentary affairs that can deliver tangible benefits to people in both countries.
