Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila has directed the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) to immediately revoke passenger transport licences for all upcountry bus companies that defy directives requiring them to commence their journeys from the Magufuli International Bus Terminal.

Chalamila issued the directive on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, during a visit to the Magufuli Bus Terminal to assess the implementation of directives he recently issued regarding the use of the facility.

He said Dar es Salaam continues to face severe traffic congestion, noting that one of the contributing factors is the establishment of unofficial pick-up and drop-off points by upcountry bus operators across the city.

According to Chalamila, the practice forces buses to enter and stop in congested areas, further worsening traffic conditions and disrupting the smooth movement of other road users.

The Regional Commissioner has directed all upcountry bus companies to use the Magufuli International Bus Terminal as the designated starting point for their journeys. The terminal is located approximately 23 kilometres from the city centre.

He also instructed LATRA to ensure full compliance with the directive and take action against operators that violate it, including revoking their passenger transport licences.

Chalamila said the measure is intended to improve order in the upcountry bus transport sector, eliminate unofficial bus stations and help reduce traffic congestion in Dar es Salaam.
