Azam Marine is increasing staff and support services for passengers with disabilities and other special needs as Tanzania prepares to host matches linked to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The company’s chief executive officer said its vessels have designated areas for patients and passengers requiring additional assistance, while wheelchairs are available at port facilities.
The company plans to increase those resources during the tournament as passenger traffic is expected to rise.
“The company will increase staff through short-term contracts, while the government is also expected to strengthen its workforce through temporary employment arrangements and the use of volunteers in various transport areas,” the executive said.
The additional staff are intended to help the operator manage higher passenger volumes without compromising service standards.
The executive said Azam Marine provides monthly internal training for employees on customer care and handling different passenger needs.
The training also takes into account seasonal challenges, including conditions associated with marine transport that may affect passengers, he said.
Azam Marine also works with Air Tanzania to exchange knowledge and experience on customer service, with employees participating in training and sharing practices aimed at improving passenger care.
The preparations reflect the wider challenge facing transport operators as Tanzania expects increased movement of domestic and international visitors around the tournament.
For passengers with disabilities and other special needs, the availability of wheelchairs and designated areas is only part of the requirement. Easy access and trained staff will also be important as operators deal with larger crowds.
Azam Marine said its preparations are aimed at ensuring passengers receive safe and inclusive services throughout the tournament.
