Tanzania courts more Dangote investment in energy, fertiliser

Tanzania is seeking to deepen its investment relationship with Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, with the government identifying energy and fertiliser production as key areas where the industrialist could expand his footprint.

Minister of State in the President’s Office, Planning and Investment, Prof Kitila Mkumbo, said Dangote still had significant opportunities to invest in Tanzania as the government works to attract large-scale capital into strategic sectors.

“Dangote still has significant opportunities to continue investing in Tanzania, particularly in the energy and fertiliser sectors, and discussions are continuing on other strategic investment areas,” Prof Mkumbo said.

He spoke after leading a delegation of ministers and deputy ministers on a visit to Dangote’s industrial facilities in Nigeria, where the officials sought to draw lessons from the company’s experience in developing large-scale industrial projects.

Prof Mkumbo said the government was also continuing discussions with Dangote over a proposed crude oil refinery project that had previously been considered for Tanga.

The proposed refinery has yet to materialise in Tanzania, while Dangote has shown interest in developing a similar project in Rhamu, Kenya.

The development places renewed focus on Tanzania’s efforts to attract major investments in the energy sector, particularly projects that could strengthen energy security and support industrial growth.

According to Prof Mkumbo, the Nigerian visit was also intended to follow up on agreements reached between Dangote and President Samia Suluhu Hassan, while allowing Tanzanian officials to gain insights into the development and operation of large-scale industries.

He said the government would continue engaging both local and international investors to advance strategic projects capable of creating jobs, increasing domestic production and adding value to Tanzania’s raw materials.

The government has in recent years placed greater emphasis on attracting investments that can support industrialisation while strengthening linkages between large-scale projects and the wider domestic economy.

Prof Mkumbo said the government would continue improving the investment climate to ensure Tanzania remains an attractive destination for major capital projects and long-term investors.
