Tanzania has officially concluded this year's Nelson Mandela Month with a special commemorative event held yesterday in Kisarawe District, Coast Region, bringing together government leaders, diplomats, development partners and members of the public to honour the enduring legacy of the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, one of the world's most celebrated champions of freedom, justice and human dignity.
Nelson Mandela International Day is observed globally every 18 July, marking the birth anniversary of the former South African President and anti-apartheid icon. In 2009, the United Nations officially proclaimed the day in recognition of Mandela's extraordinary contribution to the promotion of peace, reconciliation, democracy, human rights and social justice.
The international observance encourages people across the world to dedicate 67 minutes of community service, symbolising the 67 years Mandela devoted to the struggle for equality and the betterment of humanity.
In Tanzania, this year's commemorations were organised by the Embassy of South Africa in Tanzania in collaboration with Imbombo Foundation of South Africa.
The month-long activities culminated in a community-focused ceremony in Kisarawe, where essential supplies were donated to schoolgirls from various schools across the district as part of efforts to support girls' education, dignity and well-being.
The initiative underscored the importance of investing in girls' education as a catalyst for sustainable development and equal opportunities, while reaffirming the shared commitment of both Tanzania and South Africa to empowering future generations through education and community development.
Speaking during the event, South African Ambassador to Tanzania, Noluthando Mayende Malepe, said Nelson Mandela's legacy continues to inspire millions of people around the world through his unwavering commitment to freedom, equality, reconciliation and service to humanity. She noted that the values he championed remain as relevant today as they were during his lifetime.
Ambassador Malepe further emphasised that Tanzania occupies a special place in South Africa's liberation history because of its unwavering support for the anti-apartheid struggle and its longstanding solidarity with the people of South Africa.
She said the enduring friendship between the two countries continues to be built on shared historical values, mutual respect and a common vision for Africa's development.
On his part, Kisarawe District Commissioner Petro Magoti expressed his appreciation to the Embassy of South Africa and Imbombo Foundation for selecting Kisarawe as the host district for the official closing ceremony. He described the event as a testament to the positive impact of international cooperation in improving the lives of communities through education and social development.
Magoti added that the support extended to schoolgirls would encourage them to pursue their education with confidence and determination, while calling upon more development partners to collaborate with the government in advancing education and community welfare.
The commemorative event also coincided with the observance of Pan-African Women's Day, celebrated annually on 31 July to recognise the invaluable contribution of African women to the continent's liberation movements, nation-building, peace, economic transformation and social progress.
The day also serves as a platform to advocate for gender equality, women's leadership and the elimination of barriers that continue to hinder women's full participation in all sectors of society.
By bringing together Nelson Mandela Month and Pan-African Women's Day in one celebration, the Kisarawe event conveyed a powerful message that Mandela's legacy extends beyond the history of South Africa's liberation.
It lives on through practical actions that uphold human dignity, invest in education, empower women and girls, and strengthen the bonds of African solidarity. The celebration reaffirmed that the vision of a peaceful, inclusive and prosperous Africa can only be realised through collective responsibility, compassion and a shared commitment to serving humanity, values that Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to advancing.
