TANESCO announces power cuts as Chalinze-Dodoma project nears completion

Residents and businesses in parts of Tanzania’s central, western, northern, southwestern and Lake zones should expect scheduled power interruptions this week as work intensifies on the 400-kilovolt Chalinze-Dodoma electricity transmission project.

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) said the interruptions will run from August 11 to 17, 2026, to allow the contractor to carry out the second phase of cable-stringing in the Kikombo and Mkonze areas of Dodoma.

The exercise is part of the final works on the major transmission project, which is expected to be completed on August 21, 2026.

TANESCO Acting Director of Communications and Customer Services, Irene Gowelle, said the second phase follows the successful completion of cable-stringing between Chalinze and Mkambarani in Morogoro.

She said the ongoing works require some areas to operate under special electricity supply schedules to ensure the contractor can work safely and efficiently.

“Some regions will receive electricity according to special schedules during this period,” Ms Gowelle said, urging residents to follow TANESCO’s published schedules and plan their activities accordingly.

The affected areas are in the Central, Western, Northern, Southwestern and Lake zones, although Morogoro and Tanga regions will not be affected by the planned interruptions, according to TANESCO.

The utility said affected areas may experience power interruptions between 6am and 5pm, depending on the work schedule.

Ms Gowelle assured the public that TANESCO would continue releasing detailed electricity supply schedules through its social media platforms to help households, businesses and other electricity users prepare for the interruptions.

“This is the second phase of the cable-stringing exercise in Kikombo and Mkonze in Dodoma. We will continue providing electricity supply schedules through our social media platforms to enable wananchi to plan their activities,” she said.

The Chalinze-Dodoma 400kV transmission line is among the infrastructure projects aimed at expanding Tanzania’s electricity transmission capacity as demand for power grows.

Its completion is expected to strengthen the national grid, improve the capacity to move electricity between regions and enhance the reliability of electricity supply.

For households and businesses, a stronger transmission network could help reduce system constraints and provide greater flexibility in supplying areas with rising electricity demand.

The project is scheduled for completion on August 21, with the current cable-stringing works forming part of the final push towards commissioning the transmission line.

TANESCO has urged electricity users in the affected areas to keep track of the announced schedules and make appropriate arrangements during the temporary interruptions.
