Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, has received further recognition for his contribution to Africa’s liberation struggle after Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Angola President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço inaugurated a specialised referral hospital named after him in Luanda.
The facility, known as the President Julius Nyerere Referral Hospital (Hospital dos Queimados Presidente Julius Nyerere), is located in Kilamba, Luanda, and is expected to boost specialised healthcare services in Angola.
President Samia and President Lourenço jointly launched the hospital on Saturday, August 1, 2026, in an event attended by Mama Maria Nyerere, the widow of Mwalimu Nyerere.
The naming of the hospital recognises Mwalimu Nyerere’s historic role in supporting liberation movements in Southern Africa, including Angola’s struggle for independence.
During Tanzania’s early years of independence, Mwalimu Nyerere’s government played a key role in providing support to African liberation movements, with Dar es Salaam becoming an important centre for anti-colonial efforts across the region.
The hospital’s inauguration underscores the strong historical and diplomatic ties between Tanzania and Angola, built on shared values of African solidarity and cooperation.
Beyond its symbolic importance, the facility is set to contribute to Angola’s healthcare system by providing specialised medical services and improving access to advanced treatment for patients.
President Samia’s participation in the inauguration further highlighted Tanzania’s continued commitment to strengthening relations with Angola and promoting cooperation in areas including health, trade, investment and social development.
