Mwinyi: Zanzibar seeks new financing for strategic projects

By The Respondents Reporter

Zanzibar is exploring new and affordable sources of financing to accelerate the implementation of major strategic projects and support the Isles’ economic development, President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has said.

Dr Mwinyi made the remarks on Monday, August 10, 2026, when he met Trade and Development Bank (TDB) President and Chief Executive Officer Admassu Tadesse and his delegation at State House in Zanzibar.

The President said the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar was looking to diversify its financing mechanisms to unlock investment opportunities in key sectors, including infrastructure, energy, housing, oil and gas, as well as social and economic development projects.

Among the strategic investments highlighted was the Mangapwani Integrated Port project, which the government considers important to strengthening Zanzibar’s infrastructure and expanding its economic opportunities.

Dr Mwinyi stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with international financial institutions and the private sector to secure affordable capital and improve the implementation of Zanzibar’s development priorities.

He said access to suitable financing would be critical in enabling the government to advance large-scale projects while supporting broader economic transformation.

The President’s remarks come as Zanzibar continues to seek investment and financing partnerships to support infrastructure development and expand productive sectors of the economy.

For his part, Mr Tadesse assured the Zanzibar Government of TDB’s continued cooperation in supporting viable development projects.

He said the bank was ready to explore various financing mechanisms, including project preparation funding, investment financing and affordable capital, to facilitate projects with strong economic and development potential.

The engagement underscores Zanzibar’s efforts to deepen partnerships with regional and international financial institutions as it seeks to mobilise the capital required for its strategic development agenda.
