Muhimbili discharges child after historic twin separation surgery

The Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has discharged a child who underwent Tanzania’s first-ever separation surgery involving parasitic conjoined twins, marking a significant milestone in the country’s specialist healthcare services.

The child was discharged on Friday, August 21, 2026, after making good progress during the 10 days following the complex operation.

The successful outcome has highlighted the growing capacity of Tanzanian medical specialists to perform rare and highly complicated surgical procedures locally, potentially reducing the need for patients to seek such treatment abroad.

Speaking after the child was discharged, the mother, Glory Nyambeke, thanked the team of specialist doctors and other healthcare workers involved in the operation for saving her child’s life.

She said the successful treatment had brought relief and renewed hope to the family after a prolonged period of fear and uncertainty.

For the medical team, the child’s discharge was the culmination of careful preparation, teamwork and close monitoring before and after the operation.

MNH Paediatric Surgery Specialist Dr Victor Ngotta said the successful recovery was a source of great satisfaction for all professionals involved in the historic procedure.

He said the outcome demonstrated the ability of Tanzanian doctors to handle complex and highly specialised surgical cases, describing the operation as a product of extensive preparation and coordinated teamwork.

“This achievement demonstrates the capacity of our local specialists to perform complex and rare surgical procedures in Tanzania,” Dr Ngotta said.

He said the milestone would further strengthen Muhimbili’s role as a leading referral centre for specialised and highly specialised medical services.

Beyond the successful operation, the case offers a broader message for Tanzania’s health sector: investment in specialist training, modern medical equipment and multidisciplinary teams can enable more complex conditions to be treated within the country.

The child’s successful recovery therefore represents not only a victory for the family but also an important step in the continued development of advanced paediatric surgery and specialist healthcare in Tanzania.
