The battle for supremacy in Tanzania’s boxing clubs reaches its climax today as 26 boxers take to the ring in 13 finals of the 2026 National Boxing Club Championship at Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga.
The championship, which started on Tuesday, August 25, has attracted 15 clubs from different parts of the country, with the finals expected to provide a stern test for the country’s top boxers as they compete for individual titles and the overall national club crown.
Defending champions Ngome have emerged as the strongest contenders, qualifying nine boxers for the finals. They are followed by MMJKT with six finalists and Magereza with four.
JKT Mgulani has three boxers in the finals, while hosts General Chande of Tanga, Band Coy and Mashujaa have one finalist each.
Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT) president Lukelo Willilo said the Light Heavyweight (80kg) final between MMJKT’s Eliankunda Daniel and Magereza’s Enzi Kasililika is among the bouts expected to attract considerable attention.
The contest will be a rematch between the two boxers after they met in the final of the National Open Boxing Championship in Dar es Salaam in April. Eliankunda won that encounter on points.
“We expect a competitive final because these are two boxers who already know each other well,” Mr Willilo said.
The Heavyweight (92kg) category will see Ngome’s Mhina Moris face MMJKT’s Swedes Maarifa, while General Chande’s Abdul Chande of Tanga will meet Magereza’s Shukuru Yodani in the Cruiserweight (86kg) final.
Another bout on the card will feature MMJKT’s Shafii Mbaruku against Ngome’s Sikudhani Petro, adding further depth to an already competitive final programme.
Beyond the individual titles, the results of the 13 bouts will determine which club earns the distinction of being crowned Tanzania’s National Boxing Club Champion for 2026.
For the participating boxers, the finals represent more than a chance to win medals. They also provide an opportunity to demonstrate their form at the national level and strengthen their claims for selection to represent Tanzania in future international competitions.
With the championship now entering its decisive stage, all eyes will be on Mkwakwani Stadium as the country’s leading boxing clubs fight for national honours.
