ACT Wazalendo has announced the death of Mohammed Salehe Ponda, a member of the party’s Central Committee representing the Northern Zone and Secretary of the party’s Tanga Urban Constituency branch.

Mr Ponda died on Monday morning while receiving treatment at Tanga Regional Hospital after reportedly suffering complications related to high blood pressure.

In a statement, the party said Mr Ponda fell ill suddenly on Sunday while attending a Maulid gathering marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He was rushed to hospital but passed away at around 9 a.m. on August 3, 2026.

ACT Wazalendo described Mr Ponda as a dedicated and principled leader whose contribution to the party extended beyond his home region.

The party said he played a significant role in strengthening its structures in Tanga and other parts of the country through his involvement in grassroots mobilisation and organisational activities.

“ACT Wazalendo has lost a loyal member, a courageous leader and a hardworking cadre who served the cause of political reforms with commitment and integrity,” the statement said.

Party leaders conveyed condolences to members in Tanga Urban Constituency, the wider Tanga Region, and colleagues in the Central Committee and National Executive Council.

The party also extended sympathies to Mr Ponda’s family, pledging continued support during the mourning period.

Mr Ponda will be remembered by party members and colleagues for his commitment to public service, organisational development and political engagement.

Funeral and burial arrangements were expected to be communicated by the family and party officials.

The death comes as a significant loss to ACT Wazalendo in Tanga, where Mr Ponda was regarded as one of the party’s active grassroots organisers and a key figure in strengthening its presence in the region.
