Tanzania is seeking to deepen regional electricity cooperation as Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba attended the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Eastern African Power Pool (EAPP) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where member states are expected to endorse measures aimed at expanding cross-border power trade and strengthening regional grid interconnections.
While in Ethiopia, Ms Makamba visited the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania in Addis Ababa and held talks with Tanzania's Ambassador to Ethiopia, Innocent Shiyo, on issues related to the country's regional energy agenda.
The EAPP ministerial meeting, which concludes on Friday, is expected to adopt key decisions to enhance electricity trading among member states, improve the integration of national power grids and reinforce energy security across Eastern Africa.
The discussions come as Tanzania continues investing in power generation and transmission infrastructure to meet growing domestic demand while positioning itself to benefit from regional electricity markets through increased cross-border interconnections.
Ms Makamba was accompanied by the Acting Deputy Executive Director for Planning, Research and Investment at the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), HenryFried Byabato, who represented the utility's Managing Director, together with officials from the Ministry of Energy.
The Eastern African Power Pool serves as a platform for member countries to coordinate electricity planning, facilitate regional power exchanges and improve the reliability and affordability of electricity supply through interconnected power systems.
