TANESCO showcases smart home technology at Sabasaba Fair

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) is using the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba, to promote Smart Home technology aimed at helping consumers manage electricity use more efficiently and safely.

Visitors to the utility's pavilion are being introduced to the technology, which allows users to monitor and control electrical appliances remotely through their mobile phones using an internet connection.

Speaking at the exhibition, TANESCO's Acting Director of Communications and Customer Service, Irine Gowelle, said the Smart Home system operates through the Smart Life mobile application, enabling users to switch electrical appliances on or off from any location.

"This technology is aimed at improving convenience, safety and control in the use of electricity in homes and offices. We encourage members of the public to visit our pavilion to see and learn about the technology," Gowelle said.

She explained that the system gives consumers greater control over electricity consumption by providing real-time information on daily energy use and identifying appliances that consume the most power.

According to Gowelle, the technology can help households, businesses and institutions improve energy management, reduce unnecessary electricity consumption and lower power costs through informed decision-making.

"The system also notifies users whenever a fault occurs in connected electrical appliances, allowing them to respond quickly before the problem becomes more serious," she said.

The Smart Home solution also enables users to schedule when electrical appliances should automatically switch on or off, while allowing remote control of sockets and switches through an internet connection.

Gowelle said the technology can be installed in existing homes without replacing conventional electrical wiring.

Instead, users only need to install specialised Smart Socket and Smart Switch devices, which integrate with the Smart Life application to provide digital control of electricity use.

She added that Smart Home technology incorporates modern electrical control systems that enhance safety by reducing the risk of electrical faults that may lead to fire outbreaks, while also improving overall energy efficiency.

The technology is part of TANESCO's broader efforts to promote digital innovation in electricity services and encourage consumers to adopt smart energy solutions as demand for efficient and sustainable electricity management continues to grow across Tanzania.
