Student leaders told to lead peace building in Mbeya Campuses

Student government leaders in Mbeya have been urged to take a leading role in safeguarding peace and stability in colleges and universities, with authorities describing them as key partners in fostering responsible leadership and national unity.

Speaking on behalf of the Mbeya Regional Commissioner during a meeting with student government and branch leaders from higher learning institutions across the region on July 6, 2026, Mbeya District Commissioner Solomon Itunda said the elected leaders must honour the trust placed in them by serving with integrity, patriotism and accountability.

He said student leaders should use their influence to promote dialogue, unity and responsible conduct among their fellow students, noting that peaceful learning environments are essential for academic excellence and national development.

“You have been entrusted with leadership by your fellow students. Be ambassadors of peace and stability in your colleges and universities. Use your positions to strengthen unity, encourage responsibility and protect the harmony that exists in your institutions,” Itunda said.

Beyond their leadership responsibilities, Itunda encouraged students to take advantage of the economic, educational and social opportunities available in Mbeya Region to build their skills and prepare themselves for future careers.

He said making productive use of these opportunities would help young people become innovative, self-reliant and active contributors to Tanzania’s economic growth while reinforcing the values of peace and responsible citizenship.

Itunda stressed that preserving peace is a shared responsibility, calling on students to remain disciplined and work closely with institutional authorities to maintain a conducive environment for learning.

A Mbeya resident, Raphael Kandonga of Sai, welcomed the appeal, saying Tanzania’s peace and stability should be protected by every citizen.

“The peace we enjoy today must not be taken for granted. Every Tanzanian has a duty to protect our peace and stability because they are the foundation of development,” Kandonga said.

The meeting brought together student leaders from colleges and universities across Mbeya Region as part of efforts to strengthen youth leadership, promote civic responsibility and reinforce the role of students in preserving peace and supporting the country's development agenda.
