Prime Minister Nchemba represents Tanzania at World Kiswahili Day

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has announced that Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba has today, Monday, July 6, 2026, departed the country for Paris, France, where he will represent President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan at the commemoration of World Kiswahili Day.

According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Nchemba will participate in the global celebrations being held at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), from July 4 to July 7, 2026.

The annual event brings together governments, cultural institutions, language experts, and development partners from across the world to celebrate and promote Kiswahili as a fast-growing global language. 

Kiswahili has continued to gain international recognition, including its adoption as one of the working languages of UNESCO, marking a significant milestone in its global status.

During the visit, the Prime Minister is expected to take part in high-level discussions, exhibitions, and official ceremonies aimed at strengthening international cooperation in promoting Kiswahili. 

The engagements will also highlight Tanzania’s leading role in advancing the language in education, trade, communication, culture, and international diplomacy.

The participation of Dr. Nchemba on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan reflects the Government’s continued commitment to promoting Kiswahili globally while strengthening Tanzania’s cultural and diplomatic influence in international forums.

World Kiswahili Day is observed annually to recognize the historical and cultural importance of Kiswahili, which is spoken by millions of people across East Africa and beyond. 

The language continues to play a key role in regional integration and communication within the African continent.

Dr. Nchemba is accompanied by senior government officials who will participate in various sessions and bilateral meetings during the event. 

These engagements are expected to enhance cooperation between Tanzania, UNESCO, and other international partners in promoting linguistic diversity, cultural exchange, and education development.

The visit also provides Tanzania with an opportunity to showcase its efforts in preserving Kiswahili as part of national identity while positioning it as a strategic tool for global engagement and unity.

The Prime Minister is expected to return to the country after completing the official engagements in Paris.
