Police resume receiving notices for political meetings as security stabilises

The Tanzania Police Force has announced that it will continue receiving notifications from political parties and other stakeholders intending to hold public meetings, saying the country's security situation has stabilised following measures taken by security agencies to address recent threats.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Police spokesperson DCP David Misime said organisers of public rallies and meetings should submit notices to District Police Commanders (OCDs) in line with the law.

The announcement marks a shift from recent weeks, when police had been advising organisers to postpone meetings because of what authorities described as heightened security concerns.

"The security situation in the country is calm, and the Police Force will continue receiving notifications from political parties and other stakeholders wishing to hold public meetings and various gatherings in accordance with the law," Misime said.

He said the earlier restrictions were prompted by intelligence indicating that some individuals were allegedly mobilising criminal activities, prompting security agencies to take preventive measures.

Misime thanked Tanzanians for cooperating with security agencies and refraining from participating in activities that authorities considered unlawful.

He alleged that investigations had uncovered plans involving attacks on civilians, arson targeting schools to create fear among parents and guardians, vandalism of TANESCO electricity transformers, road blockades and attempts to seize firearms from police officers.

"The decision by citizens to reject such actions has contributed significantly to maintaining peace and stability in the country," he said.

The police also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of criminal activity or individuals inciting violence, saying timely information would enable authorities to respond swiftly.

Misime emphasised that maintaining peace and security is essential for safeguarding economic growth, protecting public services and ensuring citizens can continue with their daily activities without disruption.

The announcement comes as political activity gathers pace ahead of the country's electoral processes, with authorities reiterating that public meetings should be organised in compliance with the law.
