NMB Foundation and Mercy Corps Tanzania have signed a TZS 2.6 billion partnership agreement aimed at supporting the growth of Tanzania’s emerging electric mobility (E-Mobility) sector through financing, business development services and entrepreneurship support.
The two-year initiative, to be implemented under the Evolve Project, seeks to strengthen businesses operating across the E-Mobility value chain, with a particular focus on women, youth and small enterprises.
The project is funded by the European Union through the Belgian Development Agency, Enabel.
The agreement was signed in Dar es Salaam on July 31 by NMB Foundation General Manager, Mr Nelson Karumuna, and Mercy Corps Tanzania Coordinator, Mr Anthony Salota, in the presence of Enabel Tanzania Country Director Ms Virginie Hallet and the European Union Delegation to Tanzania’s Head of Cooperation Mr Marc Stalmans.
Speaking after the signing, Mr Karumuna said the partnership is designed to address key challenges facing businesses in the E-Mobility ecosystem by providing entrepreneurship training, business advisory services and improved access to finance.
He said the first phase of the programme will support more than 25 businesses in Dar es Salaam, while creating a framework for expansion to other regions as demand for electric transport solutions grows.
Mr Salota said Mercy Corps will spearhead project implementation by identifying entrepreneurs and businesses with the potential to scale their operations through financial and technical assistance.
According to him, the initiative is expected to stimulate innovation, create employment opportunities and encourage wider adoption of environmentally sustainable transport technologies.
Enabel E-Mobility Engineer Mr Pascal Giki said the programme will also support the development of charging infrastructure, strengthen business models and improve access to grants and financing opportunities.
The initial phase is expected to support about 15 entrepreneurs with new business concepts and eight existing enterprises operating within the E-Mobility sector.
The partnership comes as Tanzania explores cleaner transport alternatives amid growing interest in electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions.
Stakeholders said the initiative is expected to contribute to inclusive economic growth while supporting the country's broader transition towards sustainable mobility and the ambitions outlined in Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050.
