The government has stepped up efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare services after handing over a new vehicle to support reproductive health programmes in the Southern Highlands Zone.

The vehicle will strengthen monitoring, supervision and coordination of healthcare services, particularly for pregnant women, mothers and newborns, as authorities intensify efforts to reduce maternal and infant deaths.

Speaking during the handover, Southern Highlands Zone Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health Coordinator Magdalena Swebe said the facility would improve the ability of health officials to reach healthcare centres and monitor the delivery of essential services.

She said the move reflects the government’s continued focus on improving healthcare access and ensuring mothers and children receive quality services.

“We appreciate the continued commitment by the government to prioritise maternal health, safe delivery and child wellbeing. This support will help improve supervision and strengthen service delivery,” Ms Swebe said.

She added that regular follow-up visits to health facilities would help identify challenges facing healthcare providers and ensure timely solutions are implemented.

Ms Swebe said improvements recorded in maternal and child health services in the zone demonstrate the impact of continued investments in the sector.

“This progress shows the government’s determination to protect lives and continue improving healthcare services for citizens,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital Director of Administration and Human Resources Myriam Msalale said the facility has continued to benefit from government investments aimed at improving healthcare delivery.

She said key developments include the construction of a modern maternal and newborn care building, an increase in healthcare workers, improved access to modern medical equipment and the provision of the new vehicle to support reproductive health activities across the zone.

Ms Msalale also commended the hospital’s Executive Director, Dr Godlove Mbwanji, for his leadership in overseeing development projects and strengthening healthcare services.

The latest support is expected to improve coordination between health officials and facilities, helping ensure more women and children access timely and quality healthcare services in the Southern Highlands.
