A Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) leader in Same District, Andrew Mchome, has criticised calls by the party’s Deputy Chairman John Heche to petition FIFA against Tanzania hosting AFCON matches, saying such a move could hurt the country’s image and deny citizens potential economic opportunities.
Heche had said he would write to FIFA over alleged security concerns linked to claims that some groups were planning terrorist activities in Tanzania.
However, Mchome argued that allegations should not be treated as confirmed facts before being determined by a court of law.
He said security authorities had arrested some suspects in connection with alleged terrorism-related activities, but no court had convicted anyone for terrorism offences.
“Recently, I heard him say we will write to FIFA to stop AFCON because of terrorism threats. What exists in the country is that there are people with allegations of planning such acts, but no court has convicted anyone for terrorism,” Mchome said.
Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on July 29, 2026, Mchome said statements linking Tanzania with terrorism risks damaging the country’s international reputation and could discourage visitors, investors and tourists.
He said major international events such as AFCON provide opportunities for ordinary Tanzanians, including small traders, transport operators, hospitality businesses and tourism players, to benefit from increased economic activity.
“Anyone who supports development cannot have such a position of opposing opportunities. The visitors coming into the country will help even small businesses such as food vendors, while also creating a new chapter for tourism,” he said.
Mchome urged political leaders to prioritise national interests and avoid statements that could create unnecessary fear among citizens and international guests expected to visit Tanzania during the tournament.
He maintained that ensuring security remains important but said the country should also recognise the economic and social benefits that come with hosting major sporting competitions.
Tanzania is among the East African countries preparing to host matches during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with authorities emphasising security arrangements to ensure a safe environment for teams, fans and visitors.
