Hundreds of tourists from Russia have begun arriving in Tanzania to visit various tourist attractions, just one week after the official visit of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan to Russia, in a development that signals a growing tourism and economic partnership between the two countries.
The arrivals are being recorded through scheduled flights, with government officials attributing the surge to strengthened bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector, including new agreements aimed at opening fresh markets and increasing international tourist inflows into Tanzania.
Speaking to journalists aboard a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air Tanzania Company Limited, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Ashatu Kijaji said the growing number of Russian visitors reflects early results of enhanced diplomatic engagement between Tanzania and Russia.
She noted that the two countries recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on tourism cooperation, which is already beginning to open new opportunities for marketing Tanzania as a preferred destination in the Russian travel market.
According to Dr Kijaji, the MoU marks a significant milestone in expanding Tanzania’s global tourism reach and strengthening economic diplomacy, with a particular focus on attracting high-value markets from Eastern Europe.
She said the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has prioritized the diversification of tourism source markets, moving beyond traditional markets in Europe and North America to emerging regions with strong growth potential.
“The response we are seeing from Russian tourists is very encouraging. It shows that Tanzania is becoming more visible and competitive in new markets,” she said.
Dr Kijaji added that the first wave of increased travel activity under the new cooperation framework has recorded strong demand from Russian travellers, many of whom are now choosing Tanzania as a key destination for leisure and wildlife tourism.
She further revealed that the government is targeting a significant increase in arrivals from Russia, projecting between 200,000 and 500,000 tourists annually by the end of 2026, up from approximately 17,000 visitors previously recorded.
The Minister said achieving this target would not only boost foreign exchange earnings but also generate employment opportunities across the tourism value chain, including tour operations, hospitality, transport, and small business services.
Tour operators who accompanied the government delegation during a recent Business-to-Business (B2B) engagement mission in Russia also expressed optimism, saying the initiative has directly connected Tanzanian tourism stakeholders with Russian travel agencies and investors.
They said the meetings have opened new commercial partnerships and improved Tanzania’s competitiveness in the global tourism market by creating direct linkages between suppliers and buyers of tourism services.
On the other hand, some of the arriving Russian tourists said they were inspired to visit Tanzania after seeing promotional content and media coverage highlighting the country’s attractions, including wildlife safaris and beach tourism.
One tourist said he was particularly excited to visit Serengeti National Park and Zanzibar, describing Tanzania as a destination rich in natural beauty and unique experiences.
The visitors noted that Tanzania’s reputation for safety, hospitality, and diverse attractions played a key role in their decision to travel.
The development is being seen as a strong indicator of the impact of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s international economic diplomacy, which has placed emphasis on opening new tourism markets and strengthening bilateral partnerships to support national development goals.
As arrivals from Russia continue to grow, stakeholders in the tourism sector are optimistic that Tanzania is entering a new phase of diversified tourism growth, with emerging markets expected to play an increasingly important role in the country’s tourism earnings in the coming years.
