Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, has officially received the championship trophy won by the Diplomats' team following its victory over Members of Parliament during the CRDB Parliamentary Bonanza, underscoring the role of sport in fostering collaboration across public institutions.
The trophy was handed over on Tuesday by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Ngwaru Maghembe, in recognition of the team's success at the tournament held on June 20 at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma.
The Diplomats' team, comprising officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports, emerged champions after defeating the Parliamentary team 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
The match was the centrepiece of the CRDB Parliamentary Bonanza, an annual sports and wellness event designed to strengthen institutional cooperation, promote healthy lifestyles and encourage interaction among leaders and public servants from different government entities.
Officials said the victory highlights the growing importance of sports diplomacy in strengthening professional networks, enhancing mutual understanding and building stronger working relationships among government institutions and their stakeholders.
The trophy had initially been received on behalf of Dr Kombo by Deputy Minister Maghembe from the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Tanzania, Comoros Ambassador Dr Ahamada El Badaoui Mohamed Fakih, before being formally presented to the minister.
