DAWASA announces planned water supply shutdown across Dar, Coast

By The Respondents Reporter

Thousands of residents and businesses in Dar es Salaam and the Coast Region are expected to experience water supply disruptions after the Dar es Salaam Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) announced a temporary shutdown of operations at the Upper and Lower Ruvu water treatment plants.

The interruption, scheduled from 1:00 a.m. on July 30 to 9:00 p.m. on July 31, 2026, is aimed at facilitating electricity infrastructure maintenance works being undertaken by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) at the Mlandizi substation.

In a public notice released on Wednesday, DAWASA said the maintenance exercise will require the suspension of water production at the two treatment plants, which are the main sources of water for Dar es Salaam and several neighbouring areas.

The planned shutdown is expected to affect a wide range of residential, commercial and institutional consumers, including areas served by the Upper Ruvu system such as Bagamoyo, Bunju, Tegeta, Kunduchi, Mbezi Beach, Kawe, Mwenge, Mikocheni, Msasani, Oysterbay, Masaki, Kinondoni and the city centre.

Areas supplied through the Lower Ruvu network, including Kibaha, Kiluvya, Kibamba, Kimara, Tabata, Segerea, Kinyerezi, Ukonga, Kiwalani, Pugu, Kisarawe and surrounding neighbourhoods, will also experience interruptions.

DAWASA urged residents to store sufficient water ahead of the maintenance works and use available supplies prudently during the outage period.

“The authority reminds customers to conserve water and reserve it for essential uses during the maintenance exercise,” the notice stated.

The temporary disruption highlights the close interdependence between electricity and water infrastructure, with reliable power supply remaining critical for water production and distribution operations.

Customers seeking updates or assistance have been advised to contact DAWASA through its toll-free customer service number 181 or via WhatsApp on 0735 202 121.

The authority expects normal water production and distribution to resume once TANESCO completes the scheduled maintenance works.
