Defending champions Dar City underlined their title credentials with an emphatic 81-55 victory over Ukonga Kings, extending their unbeaten run to 10 matches in the Dar es Salaam Basketball League (BDL).
The commanding win keeps Dar City firmly on course to retain the regional crown in a season marked by growing competition and improved performances across the league.
Head coach Mohamed Mbwana attributed the team's consistency to disciplined preparation, saying every opponent is determined to upset the defending champions, forcing his side to raise its standards in every fixture.
"The level of competition has increased significantly. Every team comes into the game with a strategy and extra motivation because we are the defending champions. That means we have to work even harder in training and maintain our intensity throughout the season," Mbwana said.
Despite their flawless start, Mbwana acknowledged that defending the title will require sustained focus, noting that no match can be taken for granted as rivals continue to improve.
Ukonga Kings head coach Denis Lipiki admitted his side struggled to cope with Dar City's depth and experience, particularly in the opening half when the champions established a commanding advantage.
"We gave them too much respect in the first two quarters, and they punished us by opening a big points gap. They have a quality squad with strong local and international players, and they deserved the victory," Lipiki said.
He added that his team remains focused on securing a playoff berth despite the setback.
"We are still in the race and our objective is to qualify for the playoffs. We will go back, correct our mistakes and continue fighting," he said.
Lipiki also praised the growing competitiveness of the BDL, attributing part of the improvement to betPawa's performance bonus initiative for players and coaching staff, which he said has raised motivation and encouraged teams to compete at a higher level.
With 10 consecutive victories, Dar City have strengthened their position at the top of the standings and reinforced their status as the team to beat in this season's BDL title race.
