Some residents of Dar es Salaam have called on Tanzanians to continue protecting peace and stability, saying it remains the foundation of economic and social development in the country, especially at a time when calls for demonstrations are being circulated through social media, while the Government has maintained that such demonstrations will not be allowed.
Speaking to this publication on Monday, July 6, 2026, a Dar es Salaam resident, Fidelis Mrina, said violence associated with demonstrations directly disrupts business activities, as traders are forced to close their shops and flee for safety. He said this leads to financial losses and puts business capital at risk.
“I have a business. When violence occurs, I am forced to run for safety. I cannot operate, and my business becomes vulnerable because violence does not leave me safe,” he said.
Another resident, Janeth Yohana, said peace enables citizens to carry out their daily activities from household level to national level. She noted that women and children are often the most affected when unrest occurs. She also pointed out that religious teachings consistently emphasize the importance of peace, love and unity among people.
Hassan Kondo said no meaningful development can take place without peace, adding that unity and mutual respect among citizens are key to building a stable Tanzania. He stressed that every citizen has a responsibility to safeguard peace in order to ensure that production, business and service delivery continue without interruption.
The residents’ remarks come at a time when the Government continues to stress the importance of adherence to the law and maintaining national stability, while warning against participation in demonstrations being promoted through social media and said to be prohibited.
The Government maintains that peace remains a critical pillar for national development and prosperity.
