Tanzanite auctions at Mirerani generate TZS 993 million

Tanzanite gemstones worth more than TZS 993 million have been sold through two auctions held recently at the Tanzanite Exchange Centre in Mirerani, underscoring growing confidence in Tanzania’s formal gemstone trading system.

Resident Mines Officer (RMO) for Mirerani, George Kaseza, revealed the figures during a visit to the trading facility by CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) Secretary for Ideology, Publicity and Training, Kenani Laban Kihongosi, who toured the centre alongside regional and district leaders.

Mr Kaseza said the first auction, involving gemstone brokers, was conducted on May 15, 2026, attracting 84 participants and generating sales worth TZS 271.27 million.

A second auction for licensed dealers, held on May 21, recorded gemstone sales valued at TZS 721.75 million.

The two auctions therefore generated a combined turnover of more than TZS 993 million within a short period, highlighting robust demand for tanzanite and the growing role of the exchange centre in formalising trade in the precious gemstone.

Mr Kaseza noted that while the Tanzanite Exchange Centre building is owned by the Simanjiro District Council, its operations are managed by the Mining Commission through the Mirerani Resident Mines Office.

The facility was established to provide a transparent and structured marketplace for tanzanite trading, enabling miners, brokers and dealers to conduct business in a regulated environment while enhancing revenue collection and market efficiency.

Speaking during the visit, Mr Kihongosi praised officials at the Mirerani mining office for their efforts in ensuring the centre operates effectively.

He said the investment was already yielding positive results, as evidenced by the strong participation of traders and the success of the auctions conducted since the facility began operations.

“The response from traders and the results recorded within a short period demonstrate that the centre is serving its intended purpose and creating value for stakeholders in the mining sector,” he said.

Tanzanite, a rare gemstone found almost exclusively in the Mirerani mining area of Manyara Region, remains one of Tanzania’s most sought-after mineral resources and a significant contributor to the country’s mining industry.
