Tanzania and UK strengthen parliamentary cooperation ahead of IPU Assembly in Arusha

On June 18, 2026, the Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to the United Kingdom, Mbelwa Kairuki, held discussions with the Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, at the Speaker’s official residence in London.

The meeting focused on strengthening the long-standing relations between Tanzania and the United Kingdom, with particular emphasis on expanding cooperation in education, trade, investment, science and technology, as well as enhancing parliamentary diplomacy between the two countries.

During the talks, Ambassador Kairuki briefed Sir Lindsay Hoyle on Tanzania’s preparations to host the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, scheduled to take place in Arusha in October 2026. 

The IPU is a global platform that brings together parliaments from around the world to promote democracy, dialogue, and cooperation on international issues.

Ambassador Kairuki highlighted that Tanzania is committed to ensuring the successful hosting of the upcoming assembly, which is expected to attract lawmakers and parliamentary leaders from across the globe. 

He noted that the event will provide an important opportunity to showcase Tanzania’s hospitality, strengthen diplomatic ties, and promote parliamentary cooperation.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle expressed his strong support for Tanzania’s preparations to host the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly. 

He reaffirmed the commitment of the United Kingdom Parliament to continue deepening cooperation with Tanzania, particularly through parliamentary exchange programmes and institutional collaboration.

He further emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relations between the UK Parliament and African legislatures, noting that such partnerships play a key role in promoting democratic governance, accountability, and shared development goals.

Both sides agreed on the importance of sustaining and expanding cooperation in key sectors that directly benefit citizens, including education opportunities, investment promotion, and the advancement of science and innovation partnerships.

The discussions also reflected the broader and evolving relationship between United Kingdom and Tanzania, which continues to grow through diplomatic engagement, economic cooperation, and institutional linkages.

Ambassador Kairuki and Sir Lindsay Hoyle reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening parliamentary relations as a bridge for deeper cooperation between the two nations. 

They noted that such engagements help to build mutual understanding and create more opportunities for collaboration at both government and people-to-people levels.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism that the upcoming Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Arusha will further strengthen international parliamentary cooperation and enhance Tanzania’s role in global parliamentary diplomacy.

The engagement marks another step forward in reinforcing the cordial and productive relationship between Tanzania and the United Kingdom, with both sides expressing readiness to continue working together for the benefit of their citizens.
