Tanzanian citizens have called on the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) to expand awareness programmes on privacy and personal data protection to schools, saying early education is key to building a generation that understands digital rights and responsibilities.
The appeal was made by Dodoma resident Fred Nyandoro after visiting the PDPC booth at the Public Service Week exhibitions held at Chinangali Park in Dodoma.
Nyandoro said introducing privacy and data protection education at pre-primary, primary and secondary school levels would help instil responsible use of digital technologies and improve awareness of personal information security from an early age.
“Educating young people early on the importance of protecting personal data will help build a society that understands privacy rights and respects the information of others. Individuals must also be careful about how they handle their own personal data,” he said.
The PDPC is using the ongoing June 16–23 Public Service Week exhibitions to raise awareness among citizens on Tanzania’s Personal Data Protection Act, promoting understanding of how personal information should be collected, processed and safeguarded in the digital era.
The annual Public Service Week brings together government institutions and the public to improve access to services, gather feedback and enhance awareness of public sector roles in service delivery.
