Solya Girls Science School opens doors of opportunity for young women in Singida

By The Respondents Reporter

In the heart of Manyoni District, a new chapter has begun for hundreds of young women with the opening of Solya Girls Science Secondary School.

Built at a cost of TZS4.1 billion, the school is giving girls access to quality science education that was once out of reach for many families in the region.

Currently home to 615 students, the school brings together learners from across Tanzania — 140 in Form One, 265 in Form Five, and 210 in Form Six.

For many of these girls, the school represents more than classrooms and laboratories; it is a pathway to careers in medicine, engineering, research, and technology.

Parents in the area say the project has eased their burden. Instead of sending their daughters far from home to pursue science subjects, they now have a modern school nearby that provides a safe learning environment.

Local leaders add that the presence of Solya Girls Science School is also uplifting the community by attracting development to the surrounding area.

Experts underline the economic importance of such investments. World Bank research shows that every dollar invested in education can yield up to 16 dollars in return, and more than 70 percent of wealth in developed nations comes from skilled human capital.

By equipping girls with science-based knowledge, Tanzania is building the foundation for a stronger, knowledge-driven economy.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s decision to establish girls’ science schools in every region is meant to close gender gaps in education and prepare the country for a future led by skilled young people.

Community members in Manyoni believe Solya is proof that education is not only a personal achievement but also a powerful tool for social and economic change.

For the students of Solya, the dream is clear: to use their education to transform their lives, support their families, and contribute to Tanzania’s progress.
