The Government has launched a new electric vehicle charging station in Dodoma as part of efforts to promote clean energy use and expand modern energy infrastructure in Tanzania.
The launch was led by the Minister of Energy, Deogratius J. Ndejembi, who officiated the ceremony held at the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) offices in Dodoma on June 11, 2026.
The event also included the laying of a foundation stone and the signing of agreements for several clean energy initiatives. These include the construction of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and a new program to support customers in accessing electric cooking appliances through an on-bill financing system.
The activities were held at Mashujaa Grounds in Jamatini, Dodoma, bringing together government officials, energy sector stakeholders, and TANESCO representatives.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the new EV charging infrastructure is part of a broader national strategy aimed at supporting the transition to environmentally friendly transport systems.
The initiative is expected to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by improving access to charging facilities, which remains one of the key barriers to EV growth in the country.
Speaking during the ceremony, officials emphasized that the government is working to modernize the energy sector by increasing the use of electricity in transport and household energy needs.
The introduction of EV charging stations is seen as an important step in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.
The event also featured the launch of the On-Bill Financing (OBF) program for electric cooking appliances.
Through this arrangement, TANESCO customers will be able to acquire electric stoves and other clean cooking equipment and pay for them gradually through their monthly electricity bills.
The program is expected to promote clean cooking solutions, especially in urban and peri-urban areas, where the use of charcoal and firewood remains common.
Energy officials said the initiative will help reduce indoor air pollution and improve public health outcomes while also supporting environmental conservation efforts.
The government has described the two initiatives as part of its commitment to expanding access to reliable and affordable clean energy solutions.
It also aligns with national and international climate goals aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development.
Stakeholders in the energy sector have welcomed the move, noting that investment in EV infrastructure and clean cooking technologies will play a key role in transforming Tanzania’s energy landscape.
They also pointed out that the success of such programs will depend on continued collaboration between the government, the private sector, and development partners.
TANESCO officials noted that the utility company will continue to support the rollout of clean energy programs across the country.
They said the new charging stations and financing mechanisms are expected to increase electricity demand in a sustainable way while improving service delivery to customers.
The government has indicated that more EV charging stations will be established in other major cities and along key transport corridors as demand for electric mobility grows. End of article.
