Residents of Morogoro Municipality, together with senior government officials and members of the Tanzania Police Force, have gathered to pay their final respects to the late Tabora Regional Police Commander, SACP Richard Abwao, in a deeply emotional ceremony marked by grief and reflection.
The body of the deceased was received at his home in Mji Mwema area, Tungi Ward, where hundreds of mourners turned up to honour the senior police officer who served the nation for many years in various leadership positions within the Tanzania Police Force.
Emotions ran high when the Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Denis Londo, began delivering his condolence message but was overcome by grief and could not continue, reflecting the close personal relationship he shared with the late officer.
Londo revealed that he had known SACP Abwao since their school days at Kigurunyembe Secondary School in Morogoro Region, where the late officer was his senior by one class.
He described him as a disciplined, humble, and well-respected student who maintained strong relationships with his peers.
“Our families lived close to each other in the Misufini area of Morogoro. Even after joining the Police Force, he remained the same kind and caring person who valued everyone he met,” Londo said, visibly emotional.
The funeral service was led by Father Samuel Kasawala, Parish Priest of Josephine Bakhita Parish, who encouraged mourners to remain steadfast in faith and reminded them that death is a reality that does not discriminate, urging people to always be prepared spiritually.
Reading the biography of the late officer, Morogoro Regional Police Commander, ACP Andrew Kantimbo, said SACP Abwao served the Tanzania Police Force for many years in key leadership roles, including Officer Commanding District (OCD) Rorya, Regional Police Commander for Shinyanga and Simiyu, and later Tabora Region.
Speaking on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Kinondoni Regional Police Commander, SACP Mtatiro Kitinkwi, described the late Abwao as a principled leader who consistently upheld justice, discipline, and integrity throughout his service.
Mbeya Regional Police Commander, SACP Benjamin Kuzaga, said the police force had lost a dedicated and exemplary leader who served as a role model to many officers across the country.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Thomas Abwao expressed gratitude to all who supported the family during the illness and mourning period, saying their presence and assistance brought great comfort and strength during a difficult time.
After the Morogoro farewell ceremony, the body was transported to Tabora for an official public viewing before being taken to Shirati in Rorya District, Mara Region, where the burial will take place on Friday, June 26.
