Mining Licence inspections strengthen compliance and boost responsible mining

By The Respondents Reporter

The Mining Commission Tanzania has stepped up regular inspections of mining licences across the country to strengthen compliance with laws and ensure that all exploration and mining activities are carried out in line with national regulations and procedures.

The inspections are part of ongoing efforts to monitor the progress of licensed mining projects and ensure that licence holders operate responsibly while contributing to national development through proper adherence to legal requirements.

Speaking at the Mining Commission’s exhibition booth during the ongoing Public Service Week at Chinangali Park in Dodoma, Statistician from the Mining Licence Directorate, Azihar Kashakara, said the exercise is essential in ensuring that all licence holders meet the conditions attached to their permits.

He said the Directorate does not only focus on monitoring compliance, but also plays a wider role in issuing and managing mining licences, analysing and sharing licence data, and supporting the collection of government revenue generated from mining activities.

Kashakara explained that the process of obtaining a mining licence is guided by clear legal requirements and set standards, and applicants are required to meet all conditions before approval is granted. He added that this helps improve transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the sector.

He further clarified the different fees and charges associated with mining licences and explained the difference between surface rights and mineral rights, noting that many stakeholders benefit from understanding these distinctions to avoid conflicts and ensure lawful use of land and mineral resources.

The Mining Commission Tanzania is among the institutions participating in the Public Service Week exhibitions held in Dodoma under the theme “Promoting Accountability for Sustainable Service Delivery.”

The exhibitions are providing an opportunity for citizens and stakeholders to learn more about government services, especially in the mining sector, while also understanding how proper regulation contributes to sustainable use of mineral resources and national growth.
