Kilwa Fishing Port set to boost jobs and fish trade as final testing begins

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania is a step closer to unlocking new opportunities for fishers, traders and coastal communities after the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries announced that final testing of equipment and infrastructure at the Kilwa Masoko Fishing Port will begin on June 25.

The development marks a significant milestone in the implementation of one of the country's major fisheries infrastructure projects, which is expected to improve fish handling, increase incomes and strengthen the contribution of the fisheries sector to the national economy.

According to the ministry, the contractor has completed nearly all construction works and will now begin testing key systems to ensure they are operating efficiently before the port is officially opened for service.

The testing exercise will cover a range of facilities, including ice-making machines, cold storage facilities, electricity systems, vessel servicing equipment and other technical infrastructure that will support modern fishing operations.

Officials said the project has reached 99.99 percent completion, highlighting the government's commitment to investing in infrastructure that directly benefits citizens and supports economic growth.

Once operational, the port is expected to transform fishing activities in Kilwa and neighboring areas by providing modern facilities for preserving, handling and marketing fish products.

Improved storage and processing capacity is also expected to reduce post-harvest losses, allowing fishers to earn better returns from their catch.

The ministry noted that the project will help increase the value of fisheries products, create employment opportunities for local residents and improve efficiency throughout the fisheries value chain.

Beyond supporting fishers, the port is expected to stimulate business activities in transport, trade, logistics and related services, creating wider economic benefits for communities along Tanzania's coastline.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the remaining procedures are completed smoothly so that the investment delivers the intended benefits to citizens and contributes to the continued growth of the fisheries sector.

The Kilwa Masoko Fishing Port forms part of broader efforts to modernize Tanzania's blue economy and strengthen the fisheries industry through strategic investments in infrastructure, technology and value addition.

As the project enters its final phase, expectations are high that the facility will open new opportunities for thousands of Tanzanians who depend on fishing and related businesses for their livelihoods.
