Tanzania is a step closer to unlocking new opportunities for fishers, traders and coastal communities after the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries announced that final testing of equipment and infrastructure at the Kilwa Masoko Fishing Port will begin on June 25.
The development marks a significant milestone in the implementation of one of the country's major fisheries infrastructure projects, which is expected to improve fish handling, increase incomes and strengthen the contribution of the fisheries sector to the national economy.
According to the ministry, the contractor has completed nearly all construction works and will now begin testing key systems to ensure they are operating efficiently before the port is officially opened for service.
The testing exercise will cover a range of facilities, including ice-making machines, cold storage facilities, electricity systems, vessel servicing equipment and other technical infrastructure that will support modern fishing operations.
Officials said the project has reached 99.99 percent completion, highlighting the government's commitment to investing in infrastructure that directly benefits citizens and supports economic growth.
Once operational, the port is expected to transform fishing activities in Kilwa and neighboring areas by providing modern facilities for preserving, handling and marketing fish products.
