The Government of Tanzania is stepping up efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and response systems across the country, with a special focus on improving coordination at regional level to protect citizens from emergencies such as floods, accidents, and other hazards.
As part of these efforts, a team from the Disaster Management Department under the Office of the Prime Minister, Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities held discussions with the Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretariat on June 4, 2026, in Mwanza City.
The Acting Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr. Henry Mwaijega, received the delegation and discussed ongoing initiatives aimed at improving disaster management structures and ensuring faster, more coordinated responses when emergencies occur.
The visiting team is currently in Mwanza to conduct training for Regional Disaster Management Committees and other key stakeholders.
The training aims to equip participants with practical skills and knowledge to enhance preparedness, coordination, and response capacity at regional and district levels.
Officials emphasized that strong coordination among institutions remains essential in reducing the impact of disasters and saving lives, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas such as Mwanza, where population density increases exposure to risks.
In addition to the training sessions, the delegation is expected to launch the Mwanza Regional Emergency Operations and Communication Centre on June 5, 2026.
The facility is designed to improve real-time communication, information sharing, and coordination among emergency response teams during disasters.
Once operational, the centre is expected to play a key role in ensuring quicker decision-making and more effective response to emergencies, ultimately helping to safeguard communities and strengthen resilience.
The initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment to building a safer and more prepared nation through improved systems, modern infrastructure, and closer cooperation between national and regional authorities.
