The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening sports development in schools, describing it as a vital tool for nurturing talent, promoting discipline, supporting academic excellence, fostering patriotism, improving health and fostering national unity among students.
The assurance was made on June 9, 2026, in Iringa by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office–Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, during the opening of the national championships of the Tanzania Primary Schools Sports and Academic Association (UMITASHUMTA) and the Tanzania Secondary Schools Sports Association (UMISSETA).
Speaking on behalf of Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, who was the guest of honour at the event, Prof. Shemdoe said the competitions have continued to serve as an important platform for identifying and nurturing sporting talent, helping Tanzania produce athletes capable of competing at national and international levels.
He noted that many of the country's successful athletes began their journeys through school sports programmes, making the competitions a critical foundation for the future of Tanzanian sports.
“The government will continue creating a conducive environment for the growth of sports in schools so that students can actively participate in sporting activities while excelling in their studies,” he said.
Prof. Shemdoe said sports play a key role in shaping responsible citizens by instilling discipline, teamwork, perseverance and leadership skills among young people.
He urged students participating in the championships to uphold discipline, embrace fair competition and respect the rules of the games, emphasizing the importance of integrating education and sports to support national development.
The minister also highlighted ongoing government efforts to improve sports infrastructure and expand opportunities for students to develop and showcase their talents, noting that investment in youth development remains a national priority.
The opening ceremony was attended by senior government officials from the education and sports sectors, as well as students and teachers representing all regions of mainland Tanzania.
The UMITASHUMTA and UMISSETA championships are among Tanzania’s most important school sports competitions, bringing together thousands of young athletes every year and serving as a key platform for talent identification and development.
The events have played a significant role in producing athletes who have gone on to represent the country in regional and international competitions.
