Local Government leaders in Dodoma City Council have been urged to strengthen ethical conduct and improve communication skills as key pillars for enhancing public trust and effective service delivery to citizens.
The call was made during a special leadership training session held at the Dodoma Regional Commissioner’s Office Hall, which brought together grassroots leaders aimed at strengthening governance, accountability, and integrity in public service.
The training focused on equipping leaders with practical skills in resource management, ethical decision-making, and citizen-centered service delivery.
Participants were also warned that the erosion of moral values globally poses a serious challenge to leadership systems, requiring deliberate efforts to uphold discipline and responsibility in public office.
Delivering a presentation on ethics and the importance of communication in leadership, Lecturer from the Local Government Training Institute (Hombolo), Ng’omange Merkiad, stressed that ethical standards are not abstract concepts but practical guidelines that shape daily administrative decisions.
“Ethics are not just stories or words, but practical guidelines that help a leader understand what to do and at what time during the execution of daily administrative responsibilities,” he said.
He added that adherence to ethical procedures and regulations ensures consistency, predictability, and fairness in public service delivery, which are essential for building confidence among citizens.
Merkiad further reminded leaders that their positions are based on public trust granted by government institutions, calling on them to protect that trust through integrity, transparency, and professionalism.
“It has been clearly proven that integrity is a key tool that enables a leader to maintain professionalism and transparency in service delivery, which is the foundation for building and strengthening public trust toward grassroots leaders. Let us never tire of being ethical because we will be saving the next generation,” he said.
On his part, Dodoma City Council Youth Platform Secretary, Jamal Mshumbusi, who participated in the training, commended the initiative, saying it would enhance efficiency, accountability, and responsiveness in service delivery at the grassroots level.
He noted that strengthening ethical leadership and improving communication between leaders and citizens would contribute significantly to improved governance outcomes and sustainable development.
The training is expected to strengthen leadership discipline and promote transparent communication practices, ultimately improving service delivery and reinforcing good governance from the grassroots to national level.
