Dodoma intensifies road infrastructure upgrades to boost urban development

By Our Reporter, Dodoma

Dodoma City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to improving urban infrastructure as the construction of Kidia Road, one of the roads being upgraded to tarmac standard in the city centre, progresses steadily.

The Mayor of Dodoma City Council, Alimwoni Chaula, recently toured the project site to assess the progress of the road works, which form part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the city's transport network and supporting economic growth.

The project is being implemented in line with directives issued by the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, requiring city councils to allocate 10 percent of their internally generated revenue toward the construction and rehabilitation of local roads.

Speaking during the inspection, Chaula said the road projects demonstrate the government's determination to improve public infrastructure and enhance access to social and economic services for residents.

He called on members of the public to play an active role in safeguarding the infrastructure to ensure its long-term sustainability and continued service to the community.

“Residents have a responsibility to protect these roads by adhering to the established regulations. Traders, in particular, should avoid conducting business activities within road reserve areas, as such practices contribute to the deterioration of infrastructure,” he said.

The mayor noted that the council would continue working with local leaders to educate business operators and residents on the importance of preserving public infrastructure and observing road reserve regulations.

He emphasized that protecting the roads would help maximize the value of public investments and reduce maintenance costs in the future.

Residents have welcomed the project, describing it as a significant step toward improving mobility and creating a more conducive environment for business activities.

Local businessman Peter Moshi expressed appreciation to the government for implementing the project, noting that residents had waited for many years to see the road upgraded to tarmac standard.

According to him, the improved road will facilitate smoother transportation, reduce travel time, support business operations and contribute to economic growth within the area and neighboring communities.

The roads being constructed under the programme each cover a distance of one kilometre and are being financed through a total investment of approximately TZS 1.9 billion.

The infrastructure upgrades are expected to strengthen Dodoma’s urban transport system while supporting the city’s continued growth as Tanzania’s administrative capital.
