Online media platforms have emerged as the dominant force in the 2026 Samia Kalamu Awards, accounting for nearly half of all entries submitted for the prestigious journalism competition that promotes development-focused reporting in Tanzania.

Figures released by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) in collaboration with the Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) and the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB) show that a total of 624 entries had been received by the June 15 submission deadline.

The awards, held under the theme “Kalamu kwa Maendeleo” (The Pen for Development), seek to recognize outstanding journalism and encourage reporting that contributes to the country’s socio-economic transformation.

Data from the organizers indicate that online media submitted 276 entries, representing 44 percent of all works received, underscoring the growing influence of digital platforms in Tanzania’s media industry.

Newspapers followed with 178 entries (29 percent), while television stations submitted 102 entries (16 percent). Radio broadcasters contributed 60 entries (10 percent), while online magazines accounted for eight entries, equivalent to one percent of the total submissions.

The organizers said the strong showing by online media reflects the rapid shift towards digital news consumption and the increasing role of internet-based platforms in shaping public discourse on development issues.

A breakdown of submissions by category shows that 569 entries, equivalent to 91.2 percent, were submitted under the journalism category. Another 25 entries (4 percent) were received in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) category, while 20 entries (4.8 percent) were submitted under the media institutions category.

According to the organizers, the volume and diversity of entries demonstrate journalists’ continued commitment to informing, educating and mobilizing the public on matters of national importance.

The trend also highlights how technological advancements are transforming the way news is produced and distributed, allowing journalists to reach wider audiences through digital channels.

TCRA, TAMWA and JAB commended journalists and media houses for their participation, describing the response as a sign of the sector’s growing dedication to quality journalism and development reporting.

The institutions also encouraged media practitioners whose submissions are still undergoing processing through the awards system to complete the necessary procedures within the stipulated timeframe.

Over the years, the Samia Kalamu Awards have evolved into a key platform for celebrating journalistic excellence, promoting professional standards and recognizing media contributions to Tanzania’s development agenda. With digital media leading the pack this year, the awards also reflect the changing face of journalism in an increasingly connected society.
