Tanzania’s national swimming team has been challenged to rise to the occasion and win medals at the upcoming African Championships scheduled to take place from May 5 to 10 in Algeria.
The team was officially handed the national flag ahead of its departure on the night of May 2, marking a symbolic send-off as the athletes prepare to represent the country on the continental stage.
Speaking during the flag handover ceremony, National Sports Council (NSC) Senior Sports Officer Charles Maguzu called on the swimmers to recognize the responsibility entrusted to them and repay the confidence shown by stakeholders through strong performances.
He said the team’s participation has been made possible through the support of the government via the NSC, the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA), parents, and various sponsors who contributed to the team’s preparations.
“We commend TSA leaders for their efforts in nurturing swimming talent in the country. The athletes selected for this opportunity must make the most of it and compete with pride, knowing they are representing the entire nation,” Maguzu said.
TSA Chairman David Mwasyoge expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, noting that the primary goal is to see the swimmers excel and reach advanced stages of the competition.
He added that participation in such high-level events forms part of a broader strategy to develop talent and expose athletes to international competition.
“We appreciate the government, through the NSC, and the parents for their cooperation. This experience will help our swimmers gain exposure and prepare for even bigger competitions, including global events,” Mwasyoge said.
Team Manager Khadija Shebe said preparations have been completed and the squad is in high spirits ahead of the championships.
Technical Director Amin Mfaume revealed that the Tanzanian delegation comprises 19 members, including 14 youth swimmers, three senior athletes, and two competitors in the Masters category.
He added that the athletes are in good condition and fully prepared to compete strongly in pursuit of positive results while proudly flying the national flag.
Women’s team captain Filbertha Demello assured that the swimmers will give their best efforts, guided by their coaches’ instructions and the discipline instilled during training, in a bid to deliver strong performances for Tanzania.
