Tanzania has made a significant milestone in the health sector after Dr Livin Peter Mumburi of the Muhimbili National Hospital became the country’s first specialist in paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology following advanced medical training in South Africa.
Dr Mumburi completed a two-year subspecialty fellowship at the University of Cape Town, making him the first and only Tanzanian doctor with specialised expertise in diseases of the digestive system and liver in children.
The achievement is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s capacity to provide specialised treatment for children suffering from liver and gastrointestinal diseases, which often require advanced diagnosis, continuous monitoring and long-term care.
Speaking after returning to the country, Dr Mumburi said Tanzania still faces major challenges in managing liver and digestive system diseases among children due to limited specialised services.
“Challenges related to liver and digestive system diseases among children remain significant in Tanzania. Many children need specialised treatment services that were previously very limited. We want to improve these services locally so children can receive quality treatment without travelling outside Tanzania,” he said.
Health experts note that the shortage of specialised paediatric services has in some cases forced families to seek treatment abroad, increasing costs and limiting access for many patients.
At Muhimbili, Dr Mumburi is expected to strengthen existing paediatric gastroenterology services through specialised clinics, while also supporting efforts to establish a dedicated liver clinic for children.
The planned clinic is expected to improve early diagnosis, treatment and long-term care for children with liver conditions and digestive disorders.
The development reflects Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to expand specialised healthcare services and reduce dependence on overseas treatment through investment in advanced medical training for local specialists.
