Simbu, Stumai shine as top Athletes at NSC Awards

Long-distance runner Alphonce Felix Simbu and athlete Stumai Abdallah have emerged as the best sports personalities of the year after being honoured at the National Sports Council (NSC) Awards held at the Super Dome in Masaki, Dar es Salaam.

The prestigious ceremony, held on the night of May 8, 2026, brought together leading figures from Tanzania’s sports sector to celebrate excellence, discipline, and outstanding performance across various sporting disciplines. 

The awards were presented by Mwigulu Nchemba, who attended as guest of honour representing President Hussein Ali Mwinyi of Zanzibar and the Revolutionary Government.

Simbu and Stumai were recognized for their outstanding consistency and strong performances in both local and international competitions. Their achievements have continued to raise Tanzania’s profile in athletics, earning them the highest individual honours of the night.

In the club category, Simba Sports Club was named Best Men’s Club after an impressive competitive season, edging out Dar City. 

On the women’s side, JKT Queens secured the Best Women’s Club award following a dominant run in their competitions.

In the media category, veteran journalist Tido Mhando received a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his long-standing contribution to sports journalism in Tanzania. 

Khalid Msabaha was named Best Male Sports Journalist, while Fatima Chikawe once again stood out by winning Best Female Sports Journalist.

Coaching honours went to Antony Muingereza, who was named Best Male Coach for his tactical leadership and results-driven performance. 

Esther Chabruma was awarded Best Female Coach for her strong role in developing and mentoring athletes in women’s sports.

In officiating, Shaban Mahobonya was recognised as Best Male Basketball Referee, while Rehema Saidi received the Best Female Official award in para-sports. 

Shadrack Hebron was also honoured as Best Male Official in para-sports for his contribution to fair play and professionalism.

At national team level, the Tanzania women’s futsal team was named Best Women’s National Team following an impressive series of performances. 

Taifa Stars received the Best Men’s National Team award in recognition of their efforts and competitive displays on the international stage.

In the youth categories, Rose Katamboi was named Best Young Female Athlete, while Raymond Francis earned the Best Young Male Athlete award, reflecting the growing pool of young sporting talent in the country.

A special recognition award was also given posthumously to legendary boxer the late Titus Simba as Best Former Athlete, honouring his lasting legacy and contribution to the development of boxing in Tanzania.

The NSC Awards continue to serve as an important platform for recognizing excellence, motivating athletes, and strengthening the growth and professionalism of sports across the country.
