Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has said that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has introduced major reforms that have significantly transformed Tanzania’s sports sector, strengthening competitiveness and improving the performance of athletes and teams at both national and international levels.
He made the remarks on Saturday, May 9, 2026, while representing the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, at the National Sports Council Awards (NSCA) ceremony held at The Super Dome Masaki in Dar es Salaam.
The Prime Minister said the current achievements in sports are a reflection of President Samia’s strong commitment to developing the sector through policy reforms, strategic investments, and institutional strengthening.
He noted that the establishment of the Sports Development Fund is one of the most important milestones, describing it as a clear demonstration of the government’s intention to build a sustainable sports industry in the country.
“President Samia Suluhu Hassan has made major reforms in sports. The establishment of the Sports Development Fund is among the key achievements in this sector,” said Mwigulu.
He further said that popular motivational expressions such as “Mama’s goal” and “Mama’s knockout” have played a role in boosting morale among athletes and sports clubs, leading to improved performance in international competitions.
“In the past, our teams were often regarded as participants with little chance against strong teams from other regions. Today, the situation has changed. Tanzania is performing well and gaining recognition internationally,” he added.
The Prime Minister also highlighted government investments in sports infrastructure, including the construction of the AFCON stadium in Arusha and the major renovation of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, saying these projects are key to elevating the country’s sporting standards.
He stressed that such investments are laying a strong foundation for long-term success in the sports sector and improving Tanzania’s competitiveness on the global stage.
“All these efforts are building a strong base for success in sports. As the Chief Government Supervisor, I will continue to ensure the President’s vision is fully implemented to achieve the intended results,” he said.
On the awards, Mwigulu said the NSCA recognition serves as an important platform to motivate sports stakeholders and honor athletes, journalists, and officials who have excelled in representing the country.
He also called on the Ministry responsible for lands and housing to protect open spaces designated for sports, stressing that they are essential for nurturing young talent and developing future athletes.
Various sports stakeholders who performed well in 2025 were recognized during the ceremony, which brought together key players in the sports industry.
The NSCA awards are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen sports development, improve competitiveness, and create a structured system for identifying and nurturing talent across the country.
