The Government of Tanzania has stepped up efforts to improve sports education in schools by strengthening the capacity of sports teachers, as part of a wider strategy to nurture young talent and raise the standards of sports development in the country.
The Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, said the government is committed to ensuring that teachers responsible for sports education are well trained and equipped with modern skills that match current global standards in sports training and management.
He made the remarks on May 9, 2026, during the Sports Awards Night organised by the National Sports Council of Tanzania (NSC), where sports stakeholders gathered to celebrate excellence and discuss the future of sports development in the country.
Makonda said improving the skills of sports teachers is a key step in ensuring that students are identified and developed at an early stage.
He noted that well-trained teachers play a major role in discovering hidden talents and guiding students to achieve their full potential in different sporting disciplines.
He emphasized that the government is working to ensure that teachers handling sports in schools meet the required professional standards and receive continuous training to keep up with changes in modern sports science and coaching techniques.
According to him, this initiative will not only improve the quality of sports education but also contribute to producing disciplined, skilled, and competitive athletes who can represent Tanzania at national and international levels.
Makonda further said the government is also focusing on improving working conditions for teachers, including providing motivation and creating a better environment that will enable them to perform effectively and deliver quality training to students.
He added that collaboration with communities and key stakeholders remains a priority, stressing that sports development requires joint efforts from the government, schools, and the private sector to build a strong foundation for future generations.
The initiative forms part of broader national efforts to strengthen the sports sector, promote youth development, and ensure that Tanzania produces professionals and athletes who are innovative, competitive, and capable of excelling globally.
