The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has planted 40,000 tree seedlings across Tanzania in a fresh push to promote environmental conservation and climate resilience as the institution prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The nationwide exercise was carried out in partnership with the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), regional and district authorities, local government councils, schools, environmental stakeholders and environmental ambassadors.
Apart from tree planting, the campaign also focused on providing environmental education to communities, students and other stakeholders to strengthen awareness on conservation and the effects of climate change.
Speaking during the exercise, Immaculate Sware Semesi said NEMC has a legal responsibility to safeguard the environment and ensure natural resources are protected for present and future generations.
She said the council chose to mark its 40th anniversary through practical environmental activities rather than ceremonial events alone.
“As we approach 40 years since the establishment of NEMC, we want the celebrations to reflect action. Our vision is to see a greener Tanzania with clean and healthy air,” said Dr Semesi.
She added that the campaign also aligns with the environmental conservation agenda championed by Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has consistently called for sustainable management of natural resources.
The exercise was implemented through NEMC’s 13 zonal offices, including Dodoma, Arusha, Bagamoyo, Mtwara, Geita, Mwanza, Temeke, Ilala, Kigoma and Morogoro-Rufiji zones.
NEMC said the tree-planting initiative will continue as part of long-term efforts to improve environmental sustainability and reduce the impact of climate change across the country.
