Kilwa District Commissioner Mohamed Nyundo has commended the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for its readiness and planning in supplying electricity to the Kilwa Fishing Port project, describing the development as a strategic investment with significant economic potential for the country.
Nyundo made the remarks on May 6, 2026, during a site visit led by TANESCO Managing Director Lazaro Twange to assess progress on electricity infrastructure supporting the fishing port project in Kilwa.
The district commissioner said the project is expected to unlock new economic opportunities in the fisheries sector and strengthen industrial activities linked to fish processing and marine trade.
He noted, however, that while TANESCO had completed preparations to supply electricity to the port, the contractor had yet to finalize some of the systems required to receive power from the national utility.
“I commend TANESCO and its technical team for their commitment. They have already identified the requirements needed to connect electricity to the port, but the contractor still has pending works on the receiving infrastructure,” Nyundo said.
Speaking during the visit, TANESCO Managing Director Lazaro Twange said the utility has sufficient power capacity to support the fishing port, adding that a 33-kilovolt transmission line has already been constructed from Somanga to supply electricity to the facility.
Twange added that TANESCO is also expanding the Singino substation in Kilwa through the installation of a new 5MVA transformer to strengthen electricity reliability in the area and support growing industrial demand.
“We have adequate electricity for the fishing port. Once operational, the facility is expected to require about 2.5 megawatts of power, which will be supplied directly from our Somanga power station,” Twange explained.
The visit forms part of TANESCO’s broader inspection tour of ongoing electricity projects across the Coast, Lindi and Mtwara regions, as the utility moves to strengthen energy infrastructure in key economic corridors.
