Information, protocol, communication and public relations officers from ministries and public institutions across Tanzania have planted 2,000 trees at the Agafilo water catchment area in Njombe Region, reinforcing national efforts to conserve the environment and protect vital water sources.

The exercise was carried out alongside an ongoing working session for the officers in Njombe, organised by the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports since May 6, 2026.

The tree-planting initiative is aimed at strengthening environmental conservation and safeguarding water sources that support projects designed to provide Njombe residents with clean, safe and reliable water services.

Speaking during the exercise, Acting Director of Information Services (MAELEZO), Mr Kevin Kanje, said environmental conservation remains critical to Tanzania’s sustainable development agenda, calling on institutions and citizens to take an active role in protecting natural resources.

“Protecting the environment is essential for the future of our country. Planting these 2,000 trees demonstrates our commitment to building a greener and more environmentally secure Tanzania,” Mr Kanje said.

He noted that information officers have an important responsibility to educate the public on environmental conservation through the communication platforms they manage in their daily work.

Njombe District Forest Officer from the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), SCO Audatus Kashamakula, said the tree species selected were suitable for protecting water catchment areas and restoring natural vegetation in ecologically sensitive zones.

He added that TFS would continue collaborating with institutions and communities to ensure the trees are properly maintained in order to achieve long-term conservation goals and help address the effects of climate change.

Participants in the exercise described the initiative as a practical learning opportunity that highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship and collective responsibility in protecting national resources.

The campaign also reflects growing institutional support for national tree-planting programmes aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability and preserving water sources across the country.
