Taekwondo National Championships set for Dar es Salaam

The Tanzania Taekwondo Federation (TTF) has announced plans to host the National Taekwondo Championships later this year in Dar es Salaam as part of efforts to promote and develop the sport across the country.

Speaking in an interview, TTF Secretary General Joseph William said the championships are aimed at increasing public awareness and participation in taekwondo, particularly among young people.

He could not disclosed the date and month of the championship

He explained that the federation has already introduced zonal training programs nationwide, where athletes gather twice a month to train and improve their skills.

“We have been inactive for many years, but the new TTF leadership is committed to reviving the sport,” he said.

“Currently, we have zonal training sessions where athletes meet twice every month. We are also implementing youth development programs, and this year we plan to host the National Championships in Dar es Salaam.”he added

According to Joseph William, these initiatives are expected to strengthen the sport’s growth and attract potential sponsors to support federation activities.

“At the moment, most of our activities are self-funded because many people, including potential sponsors, still know very little about taekwondo,” he said.

“This makes it difficult for us to secure financial support. Although we receive material assistance from our world governing body, World Taekwondo (WT), we currently do not receive financial support from any organization.”he added

The TTF Secretary General also revealed that Tanzania will not send athletes to the upcoming Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He explained that the federation did not receive an invitation from the Tanzania Olympic Committee, the local coordinating body for the Games.
