Gerson Msigwa has urged Tanzanians to safeguard peace and national unity, warning against individuals he said were being used to incite violence and division in the country.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday in Njombe Region during a visit to an avocado farm owned by a local investor, Msigwa said Tanzania’s economic growth and social development depend on peace and stability.
“There are many messages being spread and many people encouraging unrest,” Msigwa said. “Mwalimu Nyerere once warned that imperialists never sleep, and sometimes they use fellow Tanzanians to achieve their goals.”
He said no country could achieve sustainable development if its citizens were constantly involved in conflict, protests and destruction of infrastructure or economic activities.
“If we reach that stage, we will not succeed,” he added.
Msigwa called on citizens to reject all forms of incitement that could lead to violence, saying most Tanzanians had already shown commitment to maintaining peace.
“I urge Tanzanians to protect our peace with great determination and reject any calls that promote chaos and violence in our country,” he said.
The government spokesperson also called on information officers and journalists across the country to dedicate more efforts to public education campaigns promoting peace, unity and social cohesion.
He said maintaining stability would be essential for the implementation of Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050 and other long-term national development goals.
The remarks come as Tanzania continues to emphasize political stability and economic development as central pillars of government policy.
