Donkey health services and welfare education launched in Geita Region

Veterinary experts from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, together with institutions under the ministry, in collaboration with INADES-Formation Tanzania and ASPA, have launched a three-day mobile veterinary clinic and donkey welfare education programme in Geita Region.

The exercise, which began on May 6, 2026, is being conducted in Magogo, Magenge, and Mgusu villages with the aim of improving the health and welfare of donkeys through both treatment services and practical education for farmers and users of the animals.

According to organizers, the initiative focuses on equipping donkey owners and users with knowledge on proper handling techniques, appropriate use of working equipment, basic animal health care, and improved management practices.

The goal is to enhance both the welfare of donkeys and their productivity, as they play an important role in transportation and household economic activities in rural communities.

During the clinic sessions, veterinary professionals are providing a range of services including health screening, treatment of sick animals, and advisory services.

Owners are also being guided on early detection of diseases, prevention methods, and humane handling practices to reduce unnecessary suffering among working donkeys.

Experts involved in the programme emphasized that donkeys are often subjected to overwork, injuries, and poor living conditions, largely due to lack of awareness among users.

They noted that improving knowledge and access to veterinary services is key to reducing these challenges and ensuring that the animals are treated with care and respect.

The outreach programme is expected to benefit a large number of donkey owners in the selected areas, while also serving as a model for future animal welfare interventions in other regions of Tanzania where donkeys are widely used for domestic and economic activities.

The three-day exercise will conclude on May 8, 2026, and will coincide with the National Donkey Day celebrations to be held in Geita Region.

The main guest for the event is expected to be the Geita Regional Commissioner, Martin Shigela.

This year’s theme for the celebrations is: “Protecting Africa’s Donkeys is Our Shared Responsibility.”

Organizers say the theme reflects the growing recognition of the importance of donkeys in supporting livelihoods, especially in rural and peri-urban communities, and calls for collective action to ensure their protection and proper care.

The initiative also highlights ongoing efforts by the government and development partners to strengthen animal welfare systems in the country through education, outreach, and improved access to veterinary services.
