The Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA) has begun installing new high-capacity pumps aimed at improving water supply services and reducing recurring shortages in Dar es Salaam and the Coast Region.
The installation involves three pumps out of seven that arrived in early May this year. The equipment, valued at 16.5 billion shillings, is expected to strengthen water production and improve reliability across major supply systems serving the two regions.
The pumps are being installed at key production facilities, including Ruvu Juu and Ruvu Chini. The first phase has started at the Ruvu Juu Water Treatment Plant in Mlandizi, Coast Region, where technical teams are overseeing the installation to ensure proper setup and performance.
The Ruvu Juu Water Treatment Plant (Ruvu Juu Water Treatment Plant) plays a central role in supplying treated water to Dar es Salaam and surrounding areas.
The Ruvu Chini Water System (Ruvu Chini Water System) is also part of the wider infrastructure expected to benefit from the new installations once the project progresses to later phases.
Speaking on the ongoing exercise, Ruvu Juu Plant Manager Engineer Juma Kasekwa said the new pumps are designed to improve the abstraction of raw water from the river and its transfer into treatment facilities for processing.
He said the installation marks an important step in addressing long-standing operational challenges that have at times affected the stability of water supply.
According to him, the new pumps are more efficient and are expected to reduce frequent breakdowns and maintenance interruptions that previously led to service disruptions.
He added that the improved systems will help shorten downtime during maintenance and ensure more consistent water production.
DAWASA said the ongoing installation reflects its commitment to strengthening water infrastructure and ensuring reliable supply for residents in Dar es Salaam and the Coast Region, especially as demand continues to grow.
